Formative assessment provides students with ongoing, meaningful feedback. Its purpose is not to place students into performance categories, but to help them understand what they are doing well, where they can improve, and what steps will support their continued growth. For this reason, feedback focuses on students’ work and performance rather than on their personality. Teachers use descriptive language, recognize progress, and provide guidance that helps students move forward. An important part of this process is learning from mistakes. We do not view mistakes as failures, but as a natural part of learning and an opportunity for further improvement.
More Than Grades and Tests
At Maple Bear, we look beyond correct answers. We also pay attention to how students think, collaborate, communicate, and approach new challenges. Teachers use daily observations, project-based learning, presentations, discussions, and practical activities to gain a comprehensive understanding of each student’s development.

They regularly reflect on what they have achieved, what they would like to improve, and which steps will help them reach their next goals. While formative assessment forms the foundation of our day-to-day practice, end-of-year reporting also plays an important role. It provides a summary of a student’s progress throughout the year and offers a comprehensive picture of their learning and development.
For this reason, Maple Bear schools use the Vysvědčení JINAK (“Report Card Differently”) concept, developed by the Faculty of Education at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic. This approach is based on the idea that a report card should be more than a collection of grades. Instead, it should provide a meaningful account of a student’s development. Alongside academic achievement, it highlights individual progress, the development of key competencies, and recommendations for future learning.
This philosophy aligns closely with the Maple Bear approach. It builds on the formative work carried out by teachers throughout the year and transforms ongoing observations of student growth into a clear and meaningful summary for both students and their families.
